Children's Department Information

Introduction to Our Department
The Children's Department is always bubbling with excitement. As you walk into the Children's room, you will see on your right a New Book Display shelf. These books include new juvenile fiction, non-fiction, picture books (JE), easy chapter books and media kits. On your left as you enter the Children's Room, you will see three computers with our library catalog. You may search for books by author, title, subject or keywords. A librarian at the Children's Service Desk is available to help you with your search if necessary.

There is always something new going on in the Children's Department, so come on in and explore!

Magazines
There is a large collection of magazines available for both in-library use and circulation. You may look at the current issues of magazines, which are in plastic holders, while in the library. Older issues of magazines, housed underneath the current issues, are available to check out for a week at a time. There is no limit on the number of magazines you may check out. Click here for just a sampling of the magazines we have available.

Media Kits and Videos
Children who like to listen to tapes and follow along with the story enjoy our juvenile media kits in the purple bags. The kits go out for a week at a time, and there is no limit on media kits. Audio books are also available for the older readers. You can check out abridged books for a week at a time, unabridged for three weeks. Again, there is no limit to how many you may take. You will find these in the main lobby across from the Circulation Desk.

Videos include educational topics and entertainment. These videos are next to the magazines in the Children's room. You can check them out for one week free of charge.

Puppets and Puzzles Young boy enjoying a magazine
Take a look at our "wild animal tree", a.k.a. puppet tree. You can check out our very popular puppets for a week at a time. Favorite attractions in the Children's Department are the puzzles and small animal collection. These fun educational toys are available to play with while in the library. We have recently added some new wooden animal puzzles to our collection for you to enjoy in the library.

Reference
We have a large reference section, to be used while in the library. Looking for a picture book about elephants, friendship, illness, colors, or the alphabet? Look in the reference book A to Zoo. There are animal encyclopedias, reference books on explorers, reference sets on space, Colonial America, the elements, and many others. If you need help, please ask at the Children's Service Desk.

Pop-Up Books
The Children's Department has pop-up and lift-the-flap books that are fun to look at and read. Po-Up Books cannot be checked out, but you can enjoy reading them and sharing them with your children while you are visiting the library!

Theme Kits
Theme kits are designed for preschoolers. They are in blue mesh bags and include multimedia items such as videos, puzzles, books, etc. Each theme kit is based on a specific learning subject including counting, potty training, alphabet and transportation.

Little Girls at the library Children's Programs
Various programs are offered throughout the year for children ages
12 months and up. Click here for details on our current programs.

Storytimes

Children who are in Kindergarten through Second Grade have the opportunity to be a R.E.A.L. Kid (Relax, Eat, And Listen). R.E.A.L. Kids unwind and relax after a day at school by having a snack while listening to stories. For Third - Fifth Graders, the programs vary and usually involve a craft activity or learning activity.

Summer Reading Program
A very important and big event takes place each summer in the Children's Department. The Summer Reading Program is a six week program filled with stories, crafts, reading incentives and special performers designed around a specific theme. What is the purpose of the Summer Reading Program? We, the Childrens staff, want to encourage children to read all summer, not just during the school year. Much preparation is put into the Summer Reading Program to make the library a fun and exciting learning environment.
